Mk3 16v GTi Headlight Problem
« on: 02 March 2008, 17:47 »
Hi all,
About 2 months ago i was driving down the motorway at 70mph and my front drivers side tyre blew, leaving me travelling on the rim. It caused quite a bit of damage, but i've now had it all fixed. However, i noticed about a month ago that the headlights were a lot worse than they had been. I took a look at the drivers side and found that it was all smashed up inside. So, i've fitted a new one and got it all wired up. But it's still not great! When i flick the full beam on it turns the dipped beam bulb off! This only happens on the drivers side, the passenger side is fine. The drivers side lamp just seems to drain all the power from the dipped beam connection when the full beam is turned on.
Sorry for the long post, but if anyone's got any ideas at all then i'd love to hear from you.
James

nah, they are seperate bulbs and units, maybe the sidelgihts go off, as the sidelgiths and full beam are in the same part.

as mike has said the standard lights use a single bulb for dip/main and the gti (twin lights) use seperates... yours will go off when switching from dip to main

Yep, checked the fittings on the headlight unit and they seem fine. I wondered if it might be a loose connection in the main fuse box or maybe a dodgy earth?
