It's not like it's a temperature sensor - this is a rather more sensitive piece of kit, hence more expensive.

Where in Somerset are you?

If you're not too far from Bristol give Vee W Services a call tomorrow morning on 0117 941 8641 and see what price they can get the knock sensor for.  GSF don't seem to list it, but that's no real surprise as it's not something that goes very regularly, as far as I can make out.

I know it is expensive but I ended up not being able to source one at anything much less - so paid my local dealer the full £51. Go for it!

On a previous 8v Gti I owned, I has the same pinking........tried all sorts to cure it inc Knock sensor & ECU change. It was only when I had the head gasket changed  that it cured the prob. You might need the head de-corked?

I'd avoid getting your head de-corked - that would just remove the remains of the cork rocker gasket .  A de-coke is what you're after.

If you can check the timing then a good thrash will de-coke it, but to be fair I think it's more likely that the knock sensor is the problem.  One from a 2E Passat will do you.  There's a couple up in Yate Breakers, if you're not too far away from them.

If you want an example of dealer-expensive, how about £40 for a breather pipe - it's just a single, simple pipe that goes from the block breather, to the rocker.

Now that smarted this morning!
