Sounds like you may be better off using manual mode and the paddleshifts more.
For town driving I used to use standard auto mode, and then when out of town I nearly always used manual mode with the paddles.
I rarely used 'S' mode, partly for the reasons you mention, although it was good for the "traffic light" grand prix

My current Ed 30 is manual and I do miss those lightning quick changes and exhaust "barp" when pressing on
