ok, the k-jet 8v fuel pump socket is wired as follows:
1 - earth
2 - live
3 - fuel pump output
4 - ign live
5 - rev counter feed

I have a feeling you have the wrong fuel pump relay fitted to your car, how many pins does it have?

I'm guessing when the relay gets an ign live but no rev counter feed it primes the pump :)
