my mk2 one was just on a switch that you could turn on or off. it only worked when the ignition was on though. I know this for sure.

Nope, not standard. I had to fit one myself, and unlike most things, i didn't even have a loom for it, so wired it into the radio, as i said. Dont know why i bothered really, haven't used it yet!! I AM glad, however, that i got a boot light, and that one did have a loom!? The glove box may have, and i just totally missed it, but i doubt it...! Does anyone know how to get the glove box out so i can check? Or where the wires go, so i can check both ends?

I didn't have a light in my Driver so I picked up a couple from the breakers.  I found a spare ignition live plug in my dash next to where the 3 blank switches are, I used it to give me radio an ignition live and for the glovebox light.  I assume its for the glovebox light, but on the Golfs I nicked the lights from I couldn't see where the wires went sorry!

I also bought an LED bulb for it from http://www.ultraleds.com, nice and bright and will hardly use any voltage.  Plus it will only come on with the ignition anyway, so would be pretty damn hard to drain the battery with it :)
