ChipsAway any experience?
« on: 16 January 2008, 11:43 »
Hiya

Had my rear wheel arched scuffed over xmas, scatches do not go down as far as the primer looks like a shopping trolley scuff.

We have a local chipsaway in Battersea, anyone had any experience of using this one or any other and how successful it was?

Thanks in advance
Simon

Depends how much of a "perfectionist" you are.

Me personally I am the above. I wash my car with washmits etc to ensure no marring of the clear coat, swirl, hologramming etc etc. The Chipsaway process can damage the clear coat depending how they do it.

Superchips will basically prep the damaged area by sanding it, then they put abit of primer on, then colour match the paint and spray the damaged area to "blend it in" with the rest of the panel. This generally IMHO is not great as it can look quite noticable depending on the colour of the car. It also can leave swirl and marring in the clear coat depending on the skill of the guy who does it (looks horrible in direct sun light).

I recently started a thread about the problems I have had to get my door and wing sprayed by my local VW paintshop to get the Reflex silver to match the rest of the car, so I struggle to see how Chipsaway could get it any better mixing the paint up in the back of a van.

I looked at Chips away to repair a dent and stone chip in my wing, quote came in at £130 which was a "blending in" job, not a full respray of the wing. I went to my VW dealer and to repray the whole wing and fill the dent came to £140. No contest in my eyes, you also have abit more come back if the job isnt perfect with a dealer bodyshop.

Ask your dealer for a quote to repair it - you may be surprised!

Pulp58 is spot on. I had a mk 4 Gti 1.8T in Indigo Blue ans some little sh1t on his push bike scraped his break lever down my passenger door with about an inch gouge.  Chipsaway sorted it and it looked good normally until the sun shone directly on to the side of the car and then all the clear coat around the damaged area was just a big swirly mess.-Very noticeable! If you've a cheap car or want a quick fix it's good but you've a nice car so I'd be careful.

I'd agree with the above.  Some chipsaway guys are obviously better than others but they don't use OEM painting methods and you will be able to tell the difference if you look hard enough.

I always go to my local VW/Audi group approved bodyshop, but rather than go through the dealer, I go to them directly.  This actually saves quite a bit on the price.  Their labour rates are quite cheap too.  They are based in Hatfield.  If you need contact details, give me a shout.

I used them when a lorry scrapped my front bumper... The paint they used had too much purple in it and was too dark even though they said it was the same shade, it looked sh!t..... I ended up wiping it off with thinners, getting the paint from Volkswagen and painting it myself !!

Oh and they never masked properly and got all paint on stuff behind my bumper that I had to remove with thinners as well !!
