release bearing on an 020 box is unlikely to cause this, unless somehow its jammed fully in.  but it would need some serios jammage to overcome the force of the clutch springs, plus you would feel that its jammed thru the pedal as you wouldnt get any resistance up to the point where its jammed in place.  Its behind the end cap on the gearbox so you can check it without removing the gearbox, look for the green plate behind the passenger wheel.

Update....

Just got my car back from the garage. It was the clutch, the actual clutch friction plate section was completley sheared off from the centre section :rolleyes:
 
Now my geometry is out, they took the bottom ball joints off using the 3 x 12mm bolts and put it back on wrong. I even told them to break the joint on the clamp!  If I had the space I would have done it myself. 3 ,omths ago I had it all laser aligned, bugger.
