But again, surely, the amp will be built to different limits. For example, a certain beat wont produce 20v on every single amplifier, and therefore lower quality amps will just amplify the signal less, sending a smaller signal to the speaker? I couldn't imagine a £50 amp trying to amplify a signal to the same spec as a £1000 amp for example.. Therefore, again, surely cheaper amplifiers wont necessarily clip more, just not amplify as much?

The higher up you have to turn the gains on the amp the more chance it has of clipping. If you have a monster sub and a little amp you will need the gains pretty high to drive the sub to any extent. Iv read that anything after 3/4 of the gain the amp has a chance of clipping. Also as stated above you need room for peeks in the music.

In my experience with Car audio you get what you pay for. Cheaper brands will not have the quality and efficiency that an expensive one does and probably wont be quite up to the RMS stated. (Briefly)

Well, the 6x9s are set more for mid-range on my headunit, and provide a very good low signal, but not low enough for some decent bass... I think the 6x9s in the back door cards are good replacements instead of hacing 5.25" in the front... Anyway, I'll see how it sounds with the sub and make decisions from there.

Speaker type and placement is entirely personal preference but im sure that most people on here will advise against 6x9s and spend money upfront. I have 2 sets of comps in my car which a lot of people disagree with but i think it sounds well. If you have a sub you wont need the lows from the 6x9s.

To the original poster - I'm sure that you'll be happy to start with - but you may soon be after more bass.

It's all very well using an underpowered amp, but if set up properly using a scope so as not to go into clip, you may not be happy with the volume in relation to the rest of your system.  Alternatively, if you set the gains by ear until it sounded good to you, there's more of a chance that the amp may clip when played at higher volumes.

If you are listening to music which is obviously clipping (distorting) - then you deserve to fry your drivers!

Well, as stated, it was a cheap deal so if in the end I do decide to go along with a bigger mono or something then I haven't really lost much money. I can use a scope from work I guess and set the gains and that properly, and hopefully that might satisfy me for a bit.

This is a budget project though, and so I'll probably never be spending a few hundred on a decent amp until I get a better car, so for now it's more of just getting the best I can for cheap :) Thanks for your input/advice though, I'm sure I'll be putting it to use in the future.
