Help, stereo only in acc position
« on: 20 December 2007, 14:28 »
Okay so....

I have been having long running issues with my stereo, when I took it out to see if it had a line in in the back I discovered teh previous owner had chopped all the wires and reconnected them with mid air junctions.....  Teh action of taking it out caused wires to cross and blew fuses  So I took it out and rewired it..

No joy, so I'm thinking the head unit is knackered too... Problem left on back burner as I haven't been using the car for a while, now my siter in laws car is sitting outside teh house and its a polo, so I whip out the stereo and iso connector just to check and see if it is really my head unit is gone or what, her's goes in no problem...

Switch on car.. nada, switch it off and there is a blip on the faceplate....

Ah... switch red and yellow perhaps, but no... the unit will only work in the accessory position, or halfway between accessory and ingition depending on which way the yellow and red are wired,

plug in my sony hu and exactly the same, but at leastr I now know my hu is fine.....

What is going on here,   is something behind the dash gone, or am I being really blonde..........?>?????

Ignition switch possibly or some pikey wiring behind the dash. Get your multimeter or test light out and see what voltages you get when. or wire the red and yellow to a permanent live and see if it works.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

sounds like a fuse problem dude!?

if not....perhaps you have wired the earth wrong!?

eliminate the powers again to see that they work via multimeter wiv the red probe to the wire and the black to the....car door locking hinge perhaps (a clean part of body metal)
this will confirm your power supplies are workin. then do the same again..but instead of the black probe goin to the chassis of the car somewhere...test it with the supposed earth you are currently using, and see if you still get a 12v reading or even jus slighly less e.g. 11.45......

generally the earth would be almost the thickest wire so mite b worth lookin at that but not always the case.

also, i no with nissans they wont power up there aftermarket radio's without pluggin the aerial in because it uses the aerial as an additional earth so that mite b worth a look!
Why pay big bucks when you can do it yourself???
