Hi there guys,

Bit long here, apologies, but any help on any one bit would be very much appreciated!

I'm a bit new to this car audio business so need a bit of help. I've just got hold of a sub enclosure for the nearside wheel arch of my mk3 16v and now i need to fill it. I know some of you guys have this or similar sub boxes and basically i need to know which subs will work well in it (i'm looking at 10" subs here cos of the size of my box) because of the space and funny shape of the box affecting the acoustics. I've heard good things about JBL...anyone tried audiobahn??? any other brands to go for?

Also need to know how many watts power output i should go for on the sub (rms this is not max. output) i want it loud but i'm more concerned with sound quality and also i don't want to rip my car apart!

Finally i'll need an amp to power all this so again any recommendations would be much appreciated, also could do with some idea on the output this will need. Which figure should i be most concerned with 1 ohms, 2 ohms or 4 ohms??? and whats the difference between mono, 2 channel and multi channel, i will eventually upgrade the standard speakers and woud rather not have to change the amp again.

Last of all...whats bridging???

I dont think it'll be that easy but your best bet is to try and get a sub that works best in a enclosure that is as close to yours in volume (amount of space inside the box) as possible, I think which sub and amp combo to get is a personal thing, the only thing I would say is try and get a sub and amp that is well matched in power and your probably better off sticking to a 4 ohm sub but again its a personal choice.
As for amps there are a few different ways you could go, you could get a mono amp that will be for the sub only or you could get a four channel amp and run a pair of speakers from two channels and the sub from the other two channels and this is where bridgeing comes in and what that means is you run a wire from the rear left positive channel to the positive on the sub then you would run a wire from the rear right negative channel and run that to the negative on the sub, obviously this should only be attempted on a amp that is bridgeable. You didnt say what your budget is but here are a few amps and subs :-

len has done a nice wheelarch build on here try pming him, I think it was him. He ( or someone) used infinity subs, they may need to be shallow build subs.

Bridging instructions should be on the amp or in the manual and it is normally used for subs.

Thanks for the help so far, i'd already seen Len's thread...he's a brave man building that himself...i managed to get mine 2nd hand in perfect nick for £50, better than the £180 i've seen companies asking for!!

Budget is flexible...for sub and amp its probably £100-£250 but i don't mind spending that on one now and wait for the other and i don't mind going 2nd hand for the right kit that's been treated well, dont want tat though.

Which figure or level do i need to get close between the amp's RMS Watts and the subs RMS Watts...the 1 ohms 2 ohms or the 4 ohms??? they differ quite a bit!

the amp you get will determine which subs and which types of subs you can have, basically.

how many subs do you want?

Just the one, 10". One more quick question one a seperae issure, how big are the speakers in the front and back of a mk3 golf....both 6.5 inch?

they are 6.5 inch in the front I know that much. the back look like 6.5 inch too. whatch the depth of the speaker though because they will hit the window inside the door if you arn't careful.

yeah, you have more chance of finding a 10 inch that will fit.

I would look at JBL or fusion.
