Speedo stopped working
« on: 16 June 2007, 21:12 »
Was driving along today and just noticed that the speedo has stopped working. The rev counter still works fine. Also the digital speedo just reads about 4 mph all the time. The car is a 1990 8v gti. The car has just had a head gasket amongst other things. It worked fine after picking it up but later on the same day it stopped working. Does anyone have any suggestions of the possible problem and a remedy?

I had a look under the bonnet today and found this wire had come loose. Could this be causing the problem? If not, does anyone know what these wires are for?

Check the back of the clocks as the speedo cable might have come loose.

If thats ok then its your speedo cog on the gearbox.

Fix that broken wire anway.

that wire has got nowt to do with the speedo, its the throttle switch wire.  That means your car wont idle properly, and you wont get fuel enrichment when you floor it either!

Nice one, that might explain why the car wasnt pulling quite as well as I was expecting. Cheers for that.

When you say the cable may have snapped, how and where do I go about checking? If i take the clocks out and check around the back will it be obvious then?
Also when you mention it could also be the speedo cog on the gearbox, is this a big/costly job to fix?
