MK4 convertible speaker upgrades
« on: 12 September 2006, 20:50 »
hi...

my gf's mum has started moaning that the ice in her mk4 convertible isn't really up to scratch.
she's got a sony cdx-r450 head unit and fli fi6's in the front doors, but she just wants more bass. i don't particularly want to fill the boot with amps and subs if i can help it... any recommendations for a decent pair of speakers for the rear panels, or maybe running a 10" sub off the headunit??

The best and easiest thing to do would be to to get the best door speakers you can afford, and thoroughly sound deaden the doors.  You'd be surprised how much bass can be had from well installed 6" speakers.  A good 2 channel amp would make it better still.

Don't bother trying to run a sub directly from the headunit.  To start with, it has nowhere near enough power, and secondly you'd need to filter out all of the high frequencies that a sub can't reproduce.

well, the mo'in-law stil hasn't stopped going on about wanting more bass in her cabrio... just how much bass do you need with terry wogan anyway?? she's convinced she needs a pair of 6x9s to get a good sound... even though i've told her there's nowhere to put them (she suggested cutting holes in the floorpan and mounting them below the back seat!).
i'm thinking about putting a pair of JBL GTO-6527s' in the back quarter-panels in place of the stock vw items. has anyone used these with any degree of success? or can anyone recommend anything better?
