Have you tried disconnecting the battery for half an hour or so to reset the ecu. Cam timing is the usual culprit have you done your belt or anything?

Welcome to the site, as above you could try disconnecting the battery also well worth checking the cam timing.

If it will not rev over 5000rpm then I would suggest cam timing.

vag-com and clear the codes if you haven't already and rescan after driving and see if any come back

ignition timing.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

i had this when i first got my gti, have you got vag-com?  if so have a look at what numbers your hall sensor is showing..  when you start the car they normally change (hopefully into spec) mine werent changing no matter what so i put a new dizzy on and hey presto.. turned out the hal sensor was knackered,  so i checked cambelt timing and was ok (thanks to the guys on here for showing me how) and all is good.
