Golf GTI Mk4 V6 ICE Improvments
« on: 05 October 2006, 10:51 »
Hi, I am new to the forums and have just bought a MK4 Golf GTI V6.

I have a Gamma Tape Head Unit with 6 CD Multi Changer in the boot.

Basically the sound is pants and Im looking to upgrade the kit.

My basic requirement is to be able to play MP3 cd's, so do I need to change the Multi changer and Head Unit to do this, or just one of the two components? ( I would prefer to have the multi changer option to play MP3 CD's as this gives me more options rather than a single MP3 CD HU)

Secondly, is the sound quality limited to the speakers or the head unit? Would changing the HU alone improve the sound qulaity drastically? Are the factory fitted speakers sufficient, but let down by the HU or vice versa or are they both crap?

Im not looking to get amps and subs, just improve what I have already. Looking to spend around £300-£400....

Also, if i need to replace the HU, can you recommend a decent player that can be changed easily (ie connections etc)

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Cheers

Graham

Not sure you can link an mp3 changer to the Gamma head unit. Even if you can, the display is so basic you would miss out on the track naming and folder search type stuff.

You could go for a pack like this for example:

The standard speakers are quite good. The problem is they are trying to do the bass notes and struggling. What you really need to do is get a simple bit of bass kit such as this:

and then filter out the bass tones from going to the standard speakers - either by a head unit option (not sure you can with the Alpine I mentioned) or by inline capacitors.

Get something like the above all professionally installed and you won't know why you put up with the standard install! :)
