Best Set-up for 16 year old system?! :O
« on: 01 September 2006, 20:21 »
Hi guys,

My Jetta is in need of some up-grading in the choon department.  I wan to keep the interior as stock as I can and have found a tidy Blaupunkt Tape player [for possible i-pod connection - archaic I know!] with a 6 disk changer.  Question is, what is the cheapest option speaker-wise which would give a tidy retrun on sound?  The head unit is 4x40 watt output - I have the standard front speakers, blown standard rears and some kenwood standards to go in on the doors.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks!

Throw away all of your existing speakers, and buy the best 13cm components (mid, tweeter and cross-over) you can afford.  Fit the mids in the standard door locations, and tweeters in the dash positions.

As you've spent all of your money on the above components, you're now gonna have to mug somebody to get the money to buy a suitable amp to power them.  4x40 from a head unit is PEAK power - more like 4x8 if you're lucky.  A good 2 channel amp putting out 2x40watts RMS should do the trick.

If this sounds like too much - get some good modern 13cm co-axials for the doors, and amp them if you want some decent oomph.  Depends how much you want to spend.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Sounds like a plan.  I had considered buying the JBL 13s  for replacing the dash speakers and then maybe some 6 inch for the rear?

Either way, it sounds like I'll have to amp them then?

Its entirely up to you - If you buy and fit the speakers, and you like the way it sounds - don't worry about the amp - if you feel it's a bit lacking you can always get one at a later date.

Not having a jetta, I'm not sure what size your rear speakers would be - if it was a golf they'd be 6x4s.
