Ive used the exhaust sealer on all the joints but not from the manifold joint. Ill check for black carbon cheers mate ;)

if you mean manifold to head joint, that be gasket dead old boy. they cant be a lot to buy can they??? one for me 2litre turbo vaux engine cost me a whole ?6. dont look the easiest of things to get to on an 8v, maybe the 16v is easier.
