Most later Mk3 8v GTI's suffer from this, I'm lucky in having an earlier car, pre the engine change, as mine doesn't suffer.
The only real way to solve it is a remap, which will improve throttle response etc as well, so it's always a good idea!

Know it sounds obvious but you checked the plug leads? Standard leads arent the best!!!

I've just bought a Mk3 8V (1992 K), is this pre-engine change, as 1st to 2nd with my foot down goes nicely. I had a MK2 16v previously, the Mk3 8V compares well - Just cant trow it around the corners as quickly.
