8v starting/running problem
« on: 27 September 2008, 18:15 »

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me because it's getting depressing walking past ma wee golf.
I'v recently bought a '91mk2 8v,Which has been great up till last week,
Driving home from work last week it was running rough and chucked it 100yards down the road,
Towed it home and started checking,No spark from the coil so decided it need's a new one, went in orderd one and packed my case to go on holiday.
Came home yesterday and fitted the new coil still no joy  ,started checking everything again,While i was i had left the ignition on and after about 1min i could hear what sound's like something shorting out around the top/rear of the engine, while it's doing this i can hear the coil sending a spark down to the dizzy cap,and the rev counter is erratic. While this is happening if i turn the key the car will start  Runs rough but run's,I'm guessing at a bad earth somewhere? I'v cleaned the earth running from the coil to the rocker and the one from the neg on the battery but still no joy.
Missus is starting to give me grief now to get it sorted because im using her car at the mo and she's no a happy bunny!

could be the halls sender....on the side of your dizzy cap theres a block conector give it a clean. i had a similar problem..mine was that the king lead to the coil was not pushed home properly..they are little tw@ts to get on cos its buried away.
if you had been under the bonnet cleaning or fiddling previous to the problems you might have pulled something off.
btw it never hurts to clean up the main earths
