That's the Ford car link think though isn't it. Not carplay... I guess it's not apple's decision about that either...

On the Ford, Waze is connected using an iPhone through Apple Carplay, so fingers crossed VW will allow this in the future...

Its not, its Ford SDL, which isn't Android Auto OR Apple CarPlay, its another system that works on either Android or Apple.

SDL is currently only on Ford though, with Mazda taking it too (I think those two have a close relationship)

I can't imagine that its going anywhere though, its a bit of a blind alley for development much like MirrorLink was (which also is another competing and now almost obsolete technology)

"iPhone support will be coming soon via an over-the-air update and Android support will be added later in the year."

So hopefully there will be an update for VW MIB2?

No that's Waze saying that they will have SDL compatible versions of Waze soon.... the app on the phone needs to be compatible with the tech used on the headunit.

For VW to get SDL they will need to pay someone, Ford probably. I doubt if they will want to encourage compatibility with a standard from another car maker. Which is why AA and CP are really what was required to move things forward.
