The thermostat housing failed on mine a few weeks ago which was causing coolant to leak.
Mines a 2016 GTI. Fixed under warranty.

Initially thought it was the water pump as someone above said that’s a known problem but I thought I read that was with earlier mk7 cars, 2013-2015?

The manual clutches of the performance Golf petrol models are made of Asda cooking chocolate unlike the Hotel Chocolat clutches in the DSG cars.
Manual clutch failure is common it seems.

This is true.  My DSG Hotel Chocolate clutch tastes delicious and twice is nice too!

I’ve had 2 MK7’s and both had niggly front suspension issues. Top mounts, wishbone bushings replaced in both. Never did properly cure a creak in the R.

Other more minor / less irritating ones:
- rusty wheel hubs
- diamond cut wheel corrosion
- start button lettering flakes off
- premature seat bolster wear
- infotainment system gremlins (blank screen, really buggy CarPlay)
MK8.5 GTI Clubsport. Moonstone grey. Queenstown 19’s. DCC. Harmon Kardon sound. Pano roof.
