Common Mk7/7.5 issues
« on: 10 January 2018, 13:08 »
I don't know if we have ever collected a list of common faults with these cars?

People often ask when buying secondhand vehicles about common faults, so I thought maybe a thread to point them at might be an idea now the Mk7 is old enough to have significant numbers in secondhand dealers now.

(Maybe if the thread has good enough content, make it sticky Mr Admin?)

Things I have seen/heard go wrong on the Mk7 (whether the 7.5 updates any of these is anyone's guess)

1) Heater Matrix (ie cabin heating)- comes up a fair bit, costs about £1500 outside of warranty to fix

2) Cornering bulbs blow causing a scary "Dynamic Bend Lighting Error" but is just a replacement bulb needed. OEM bulbs last about 20k it seems.

3) OEM Clutches on manual GTI's and R's give out and slip with and without tuning. DSG not so much until maybe tuning.

4) Whiteworm on those diamond cut wheels, with and without curbing!

5) GTD water pumps suffer from failed impellers at around 40k - I didn't have it, but two colleagues on similar 14 plate cars did.

Feel free to chip in any more that you can think of!

1) Prone to pot hole damage - wheel bearing failure and buckled 19" wheels.
2) Creaking door seals.
3) Cabin rattles - factory not fitting adequate anti-rattle tape inside doors.
4) Causing stupid looking grin on the driver's face due to excessive enjoyment whilst driving.

The wheel bearing issue I heard it was due to vw not replacing any on the mk4 so they used inferior bearings, (return customers) my mechanic said he couldn’t remember changing any up till the mk7

Here's one for ya.............. my 6 week old 7.5 has to have both rear discs and pads replaced after I noticed chafing noises and both discs scored! Service manager told me "we get 2 or 3 cars a year with this so it's very rare but it's due to the factory fitted parts not being up the the Volkswagen quality standard".

I was utterly shocked.

Anyway, discs and pads being replaced on Friday under warranty. I've expressed my dis-satisfaction to the VW UK MD! The factory need feedback.

Sub standard brakes? probably the very worst thing that can happen to a car.

Is that really it?

Maybe Golfs really are a miracle car and you get the quality by paying for it.
