Don't know torque setting, but recommend a very light greasing of the o-ring to ensure a good seal ;-)

Usually 20Nm for M7 bolts, bit more than half for M6 but mk4 should be M7.

I would stick some spring washers on the bolts and tighten them up with a screwdriver type tool. a smear of sealant and a new o ring and it should be sound.

Many thanks for the replies all.

I nipped up the bolts hand tight after using RTV silicone then tightened harder an hour later.

here is the old flange and the block.

What I noticed, is that the coolant went down quite alot after running it, I am hoping its just bleeding itself of air and dropping as a result. The header hissed when I opened it so theres clearly pressure in the system.

The way that block looks you wouldn't have needed any additional sealant me thinks >D

I spoke to one of the mechanics next door who replaced 2 of these in the space of around 6 months and suggested a little RTV to be sure.

I think its a poor design really, surely a stainless flange would have been better? Even TPS have these flying off the shelf which I would have thought VW would have re-issued a more sturdy design?

Oh well, its in the hands of the gods as to if it holds out

It's better for VWs profit margins if they can keep selling crap versions rather than selling one good version
