It is possible with the wheel on but I always remove it.

Remove car from centre of hub.
Remove split pin
Lightly tighten the 24mm nut, I always set my cars so they have the tiniest bit of play.
Refit, job done.

Adjust rear bearings with wheel fitted as this allows you to adjust the play properly

No point replacing the bearing if there's nothing wrong with them, just might need pinching up.

I would especially if you don't have any idea when they were last done. For the price of the bearings and labor it's a no brainier. Plus then you know that side of things has been done. Up to you, just know what I would do.

I am planning to keep this car on the road so will replace the bearings and will replace the rear brake pressure regulator...the front brake pads are thin..but can be replaced at some point later I would hope..first I have to get the car through the MOT and if I can get it through with a retest within a week then that would be great as I don't want to shell out another £40-50 for just the MOT. If anyone wants to give me a hand I would appreciate it, but I will try it myself and see how it goes...there are lots of videos online and I have a Haynes manual so I will give it a go..I will make a list of all the stuff I will need to buy so it can be verified that I am not missing anything and will post it here. The car should be ok for one more year. If it fails emissions again I will consider it a learning experience. I didn't even know a whole lot about cars before I owned this Golf...and the learning curve is a steep one for me..but I am willing..
