Oil pressure probs

Hey guys, quite concerned about this, whilst driving thru town on the flat after a 50 mile drive, I pulled away from the lights and mfd started beeping and flashing "stop engine" oil pressure" so I did, I checked oil level and it was on bottom of dip, I restarted and no warning lights came back on so I drove gently for a mile to nearest garage to check/top off oil properly, I bought 1 litre of magnatec and poured it in bit by bit till it started to register, I managed to get it all in, 1 full litre, started it again all ok,  I drove another 6 miles ish to get home, I was pulling into my estate when it happened again, beeping and flashing stop engine, I pulled over and stopped, waited 5 then started and fine but as I went over speed bumps it started going crazy, going off and on and on n off? I pulled into my drive and turned off, that was it for the night as dark nd late, went to bed and just left it over night, when I checked it this morn the oil i put in had now settled overnight and was just a millimetre over the max... So plenty oil was put in , I started it up and no warnings came on, so I took it out for a run, it went great for 45 mins , so I headed back home, then as I drove down my street it came on again" stop engine" beep beep beep,
can anyone please shed any light on what it is and what can I do now? I'm demented, any help would be apreciated thanks Gav

My 1st thought is your oil pump is knackered.  I managed to split mine in half, the engine would not turn over & when it finally did soon as the rev's went above 1100 beep beep oil pressure.

Or the pickup could be blocked?

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,68442.0.html - This is worth a read mate, sounds very much the same story I've heard a lot before. The oil pick-up pipe gets blocked and starves the engine of oil. Quite serious and I'd advise getting it sorted ASAP.

Wow thanks for that link, that's alarmingly like my story! Not used car since, might have a go at that, let's hope that's what it is! I do actually feel sick with worry as its a cracking car and I would not be able to replace it.. Thanks again il keep yous updated...

Don't worry too much almost everything is repairable. And if you think a job is beyond your skills, just remember even the best mechanic started out clueless about how to change oil.

You're doing the right thing by not driving it until it gets sorted. I think, according to Jay who wrote the guide, it's a few hours work on a nice day to sort out.

Well took afternoon off and got stuck in to the car!, lovely sunny day here so took my time and followed that guide, it took me 4.5 hrs but I did it on my own. When I got the sump off I was praying the pick up pipe would be blocked, I got my wish !! It was it seemed blocked completely, how any oil got thru that collander at all is beyond me, really bad. Vw recommended renewing the sump plug too, so I did, it was only £2.70. The oil filter was really bad too to be honest, I tend to wonder if it's been left in and they've just changed the oil, I guess not many people are gonna take the oil filter back out after a service to check really.. Anyway I managed to do it, there were some challenges like the gearbox bolts and then getting the sump back on was a bit tricky too, would be easier with a mate but it's doable yourself. So got it all back together , oil in etc, except for the under tray ( so I could check my work) and fired it up, all was ok, no leaks, no noises, sounded good, put tray back on then out for a blast, brought it up to temp,  steady away. Once it was up to temp I gave it a few blasts and it went well, it all seems fine so far, feels smoother and possibly quicker ?? Is that possible??

If normal oil flow within the engine is now the case then yes, you will see performance and economy gains. Now go enjoy her!
