Hi great replies, thanks!

Most of the MK6 GTI's in my price range seem to have 65K plus on the clock, a friend has suggested a FL-mk2 Octavia vRS which i believe is basically a mk6 GTI with a bigger shell ?

Regarding the BMW, think my budget only stretches to a 325i 2010 model, from looking about it seems general running costs will not be that much different only if something major goes wrong does the price shoot up, but i could be wrong :)

Am i right in thinking in basic format there would not be much difference between the 325i, mk6 GTI and the vRS? am i also right in thinking the 325i would in theory be more reliable mechanically as there is less to go wrong ?

Errrrm, they all have 4 wheels if that's what you are asking?

One is a hatch
One is rear wheel drive (this is a fairly substantial difference)
Two are VAG and one is BMW
There are a lot of difference... Not sure how basic you were thinking with "basic format"?

And on the reliability front, how is there less to go wrong? Non of these cars should have major mechanical concerns.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

By basic i mean general maintenance, general servicing, no major parts to replace, similar MPG etc.

Less to go wrong because the 325i is a V6 not turbo, while maybe not "bullet proof" i read that they can be more reliable than turbo charged engines, more stress on them more to potentially go wrong, maybe what i read is incorrect, i really don't know hence my (daft) questions.

Is that no major mechanical concerns apart from the timing chain thing on the mk6 ? or am i reading to much in to this problem ? the thread in the mk6 forum is enough to put me off! ;)

It's an L6 not a V6 in the 325i.

Well it's NA so on paper it should be more reliable but it won't be as punchy and there won't be as many tuning options.

Stock they will be similar performance but the turbocharged Golf will be more punchy day to day, the BM will probably sound better though.

As for the tensioner, you can always add the replacement into your budget for an earlier build engine.

Over the years I've had a number of cars, imprezza turbo 2000, fn2 type R,  BMW 530d, BMW 123d and a jag xfs all remapped and all very good cars,  loads of performance with all extras in all of them all had areas they were very good in, I have a mk6 dsg remapped and I can honestly say I wish I'd had one years ago it does everything well !

Buy a brand new Dacia Logan estate car for 8495 otr. That's not base spec either.  Boost the warranty to 7 years for 850 and keep the rest for the new kid.

I had the Golf mk6 GTi 5 door which like you was to cater for the needs of growing sons after having rather less practical choices previously. All I can say is it was the best car I had owned at that point. I have been so impressed I now have the mk7.

It's a cliche but it really is all the car you will ever need.
