A4's are not boring not now I own one anyway

Think I should stop coming on this site lol go for the bmw. Cost more on parts and services but thats probably because they are better cars. Am I bias? Yes maybe. Ive had 3 vw golfs and a audi a4. Ive only had two bmw's and they just are better cars.

I agree with you to a point, BMW and Mercedes make better cars if you buy/drive the better models (6 Cylinder/M/AMG etc)
I don't personally see much difference between the lower end of the ranges and Audi VW models. I drive a shed load of hire cars in that range over long distances across Europe and I can say there is not much in it. I can say however that Vauxhall/Opel are ffing terrible with the best of the rest being Ford

Something about a BMW or Merc 6 cylinder

Valid point. I had a 528i se. lots of nice options (still best all round car ive had) and currently a m3, so cant really comment on tthe others.

If it was me I would get a slightly older bmw with more options and luxuries.

I had a MK6 GTi and loved every second of ownership, sold it to pay for a house and now has a Y reg golf 4mo and although its a great runaround I miss the GTi every day and will own one again.  Not a fan of the newest model just yet but definitely the best car ive ever owned and even my old man said the same and he has owned BMW's, Mercs, Audi's and Saabs.

The Boss has just ordered a Merc A class (AMG) 2.1 TDI to replace a Mk6 GTD
The 7 speed auto box is pretty hot and build looks to be quite good, we will see how it fairs as he has the heaviest right foot in Sussex, 2 sets of Potenza's a year

Golf would be the best all rounder for me too. Things to look out for would be the timing chain issue on early mk6 GTIs. If it has trouble starting walk away. Coincidentally mine will be up for sale soon. Currently it's in the dealership getting said timing chain issue sorted. It was the only issue I had though. It's a dec 09 reg with 50k ish and just me and 3 months with vw as demo as owners. Let me know if interested in knowing more.

10-12k I'd be looking BMW 335i in auto without a doubt, burger tuning map and alpine gearbox software upgrade near 400hp straight away. Near bullet proof too.
MK4 1.8t bored/stroked 2.0lt AEG crank, 83mm supertech pistons, intergrated rods, ACL race brgs, Flowed large port head, Supertech valves, All ARP bolts, GTX2871r turbo, Tial wastegate, 3" pipewerx dp, REVO stage 3 tune, Direct port water meth, MORE TO COME!!! Ready to go racing

MK6 decent option, research in the MK6 forum.

Wouldn't say the 335i is bullet proof...much like any modern turbocharged vehicle.

Some of the wheels crack, run flats to blame (They are considered sh!te in general)
Turbo wastegate rattle, typically replacement of both turbos to rectify and engine out to perform the work...
Some HPFP problems, more so in the USA.
The Auto box is a torque converter not twin clutch on some models, you may not like how the fluid coupling operates.
Pre lci cars are fitted with the older sat nav which runs off a cd...lol.

That said the N54 is said to be highly tuneable and a nice 6 pot but i reckon the LCI N55 is probably more reliable (Twin scroll turbo) but more expensive used.

I find that I like the BMW engines more than the cars, they just seem a bit bland. I know VAG isn't the most exciting but it seems to have more style.

Some of the A4's have quattro, if you tune this will make better use of the power but it wont be as nimble and there will be a fuel penalty. This doesn't seem too much of an issue on your estimated mileage though.

Be patient and research each vehicle you look at. Check the MOT and mileages match up...there are some dogs out there.
