I have a back fire on my 1999 gti turbo golf , It's only after changing up from 2nd to 3rd , the only mod I can c on the car is a dump valve if that helps , any ideas plz

When you say dump valve you mean a recirc valve don't you? because atmospheric dump valves are bad news on the 1.8t.
also have you checked to see if you have a decat, because i have heard of some people experiencing back fire with just a decat alone. And it's a mostly unseen mod.

could be loads of things causing it, has it always done it or has it started recently?
As Mo said its not uncommon if you have an uprated exhaust
