mk2 golf radiator fan
« on: 03 September 2014, 21:46 »
Hey guys need a bit of advice I have a mk2 that the previous owner put a 1.8t into but I believe he bodged the wiring
Basically my issue is the radiator fran runs constantly as soon as I turn on the ignition I'm in the process of trying to get it to run as normal ie only turn on when the rad gets upto temperature but I'm a little confused on the wiring.
I've brought a incline adapter with a thermostatic switch in it am I right in belive if I cut the 12v feed going to the fan and put in the switch in between the feed and the fan it will only run once the coolant has got upto temp and switched the switch if that makes sense
Just wanted to make sure before I go and start snipping wires :)

Have you tried unplugging the thermostatic switch that is screwed into the radiator, to see if that stops the fan?

If it doesn't, then the wiring needs a bit more investigation.

If it does, then replacing that thermostatic switch should get everything back to normal.  Is it a two speed fan?

It's a single speed fan and also it has a e30 rad so not sure if it has a switch already in it ?

Ah, I was thinking it was a standard radiator, fan and thermostatic switch....not the modified rad you seem to have.

In that case, cutting the positive supply to your single speed fan and wiring your new thermostatic switch into the line should make it work when the coolant is up to temperature.

You can always put the thermostat into a mug of boiling water to check that it is operational, and puts the fan on.
