Further to initial enquiry my scan showed up 2 error codes - p0568 (Cruise Control Switch (E45): Implausible Signal) and p1698 (Please Check DTC Memory of Steering Wheel Electronics) which initially points to either a wiring fault or faulty cruise switch. My first action is going to clean the cruise switch by squirting some electrical contact cleaner into the switch in case it is dirty contacts.
Possible Solutions #Check Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Cruise Control Switch (E45)
#Check/Replace Cruise Control Switch (E45)
#Clean the contacts in the cruise control switch as discussed in this (French) thread:

The following note was also found in ross tech with the section on faulty cruise switch:
Most common Problem is a faulty Blinker/Cruise Control Stalk (actually the small Lever on Top of it), early Golf 5 (and similar) Models are known for this Type of Problem. Inside the Stalk is a sliding Mechanism which looses Contact and therefor creates an implausible Signal, the official way is to replace the Stalk but Enthusiasts found its easier/cheaper to adjust/fix the sliding Mechanism instead. Not sure if the mk6 has the same switch?
Hope this helps you Jim.
