london taxi
« on: 09 December 2013, 17:00 »
My old 16v is starting to sound like a London taxi!
I gather it's the hydraulic lifters?(are they hydraulic?)
Is it a easy job to do? And where's a good place to buy then from?

How fast do you need the lifters? I know a man that can supply them

and as said what's your oil like? (might be worth swapping it first to see if that helps)

If it sounds like  taxi then my bet would be on the waterpump bearings. A friend of mine had the same issue turns out the bearings in the water pump were gone. Replace with a good make. Or if you want to be sure check with a mechanic.

Ain't the oil,changed that a while ago,it's a proper tapping noise?
Engine is not far from 170k but still goes very well.

How much can you sort lifters out for me then?
As cheap from euro car parts?

Same with his, the noise sounds like its comming from the top. I had same prob on my mk3, sounded like the bottom end was knocking, i was told water pump and was told to take the waterpump belt off and start the car and see if noise goes away. Which i did and the noise did go away. So take the water pump belt of and start car and see if noise is there. Also make sure your engine isnt hot when you do this.

Same story for my ABF, b@stard water pump bearings!...this said it still doesn't mean the lifters arent past their best.
