mk3 vr6 front wheel caster setting
« on: 26 January 2014, 05:47 »
Morning all, took the vr to quick fit to have the wheel alignment done, tracking was done and camber was fine, but i was told that the caster was out and they didnt have the settings on there data base to adjust it back. Does anyone know what it should be or where i may find the info needed?

As far as I know the caster angle is not adjustable measure the distance between the front and rear hub nuts both sides to see if there is any difference,
You could have worn top strut mounts, bottom arm mounts or crash damage. But if the Golf is lowered and the distance is the same the cast angle wouldn't of changed but the distances between front and rear would be shorter than at standard height.
Caster +1o45' +/- 30' +1o50' +/- 30' (degrees) these measurements are taken from a reference book which all garages should have and it will say that adjustment is not possible
If your Golf drives ok, doesn't scrub the tyres, stable at high speeds and the distance is the same with no sign of crash damage I wouldn't worry about it.

Pretty sure you can adjust caster by the subframe.

I thought sub frame realignment only affected camber

From what ive read and admittedly how much of is true I don't know there is a small amount of castor adjustability on the subframe locating mounts.

Thanks for the info guys, there is no crash damage and yes the car is lowered but both side are at the same height... the car is stable at speed the only thing is it vibrates badly at the moment, and thats after having the alignment done...

It tends to settle down after 60/75 but will pick up again at around 90... It's bloody strange! I have never had trouble with it before!

Balancing, tyres, driveshafts, wheel bearings.

All can cause it.
