I run 18" R32 alloys (20 spoke) with Vredestein Winter Xtreme - excellent set up

Obviously you can go down to a 16 or a 17 but I can honestly say that the 18s have been superb the last two winters and we had to deal with some serious snow and ice where I live so they were truly tested.

I agree...

I run 8" x 18" BBS CH with 225/40/18 Vredestein Winter Xtreme on the Mk5 and 8" x 18" VW Racing (TD Pro Race 1.2) with 225/40/18 Michelin Pilot Alpins on the Mk6...both superb, and neither have proved any less impressive than the 205/55/16 VW approved size that my old man runs on his Golf.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

18 inch Dezent alloys and Vredestein Wintrac Extreme - 225/40/18.

I bought them as a set from etyres for around £800 all in. Brand new, balanced and ready to go. Browse ebay for ages looking for a decent set of second alloys. I could not face a set of steelies on a GTi.

I live in the sticks so around end Oct / Nov I swop the Golf and ML over to Winters. Both have Vredesteins Wintrac Extremes which are remarkable winter tyres.

I overtook a Disco 4 in 5 inches of snow last year. He was driving at about 5 mph and the look on his face was priceless as i sailed by.
Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement
