Which mods and brands for mk4 golf 180?
« on: 23 September 2013, 21:15 »
Hi. I recently bought an 03 (don't know if they done any other years) gti 180. It's in pretty good condition and is certainly a step up from the 1.6 escort I was driving last haha. I was planning on doing some pretty low end mods and was thinking a cold air cooler, decent air filter and a cat back exhaust would be a good idea? I can't do anything high end because my insurer won't cover it and I've only been driving for a year almost so can't get modified car insurance, but I'd like to make the car my own and hopefully give it a bit more poke. I was just wondering if I've got the right idea in mind and if there's any brands I should go for or any I should avoid?

All opinions appreciated

Thanks

Like you've already said, filter and exhaust are a good starting point.

Most people also miss out a bloody good service to start you off on a good foot.  Making sure you use decent oil and filters, coupled with good plugs and get the coilpacks checked, as they are the Achilles heel in any petrol powered VW.

As said forget about any mods at first.
Do a good full service including fuel filter, oil, oil filter, plugs etc etc
Also check when the cambelt is due and get it scanned on vcds and resolve any codes found
And the. When you have a nice healthy running car (that will now have some extra poke) you can start lookin at mods.

R-tech custom remap - k04-001- 250bhp/311ftlb

"Project track car" has begun

Make sure an check for vaccum leaks. The day I got my AUQ one of the hoses was torn underneath the inlet manifold. You can take the front plate off.

N249 bypass too if worth looking at.

I just had a mate hook it up to a computer to check the TC error on the dash. Probably the MAS sensor so he's going to swap it with one of his working ones and see if it sorts it. Hopefully it will. Once it's mechanically sound it will be getting a full service so I know where I stand with it maintenance wise. it's also had the cambelt and water pump done earlier this year so I'm good on that front too. The car drives and runs pretty decent as far as I can tell so I'm hopeful we'll have a good time together ;-)

Thanks for the replies
