Grinding into 2nd
« on: 27 July 2013, 00:44 »
Hi guys,

New here and I shall post to let everyone know who I am shortly but I'm looking to find out if any of you know what could be causing my gear problem in my mk4 gt gtdi.

When driving along obviously I go from 1st to 2nd but when I try and get 2nd it grinds, Now i first first it could be a damaged syncro but when looking to find out how much they are it seems that it is the same syncro for 2nd and 3rd. This confused me a little as 3rd gear will select fine as all my other gears.

Another thing OI noticed was that the clutch pedal vibrates a little when my foot is on it (bad habit of keeping foot on clutch). Not sure if that would help diagnose the problem or not. Wanting to get it sorted as soon as because skipping second and going third can be quite irritating to say the least.

Could it be a simple job of topping the oil up?

Don't really want to spend ££ on replacing all the trans oil to find out that wasn't my oriblem and waste my money.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks :)

Will have to let you know tomorrow, been trying not to use 2nd so i don't damage the gearbox.

I have noticed though that if i let the revs drop it goes in better.

i think mines the actual linkage as it only does it in 3rd, i did originally think clutch but if it were, it would play up in all gears

that's what I am hoping it is. Don't know how to sort linkage out yet but something I don't mind trying to sort out my self.

In reply to the previous reply, it doesn't particularly make a difference when changing the gear slow or fast. Also it seemed to change a little better cold than warm but didn't manage to get back to second again until it has warmed up, by that time I wasn't able to check cold 2nd gear changes etc.

Do you know what oil it is?
I've got 3 bottles of 75 90 lying around somewhere I think.

And if i could live with it then i would do, but trying build a bit of speed up isn't that easy going 1st to third. Especially when the exhaust is knackered too haha

I can get into 2nd but it just grinds all the way in.
It's as if the clutch doesn't open fully to let the gear change.

It's baffling me, also noticed a huge increase of power in the mornings.
Seems that my turbo isn't working all the time.
