no offence wayne but its you that's missing the point lol. the engine is actually a 1.8 pb mk2 with a smaller pump than the agg engine. so my question is. would the larger pump off the agg engine increase the oil pressure of the pb engine? everthing else been equal. the thing is if I fit the pump and then find the pressure is a bit excessive then I can go down a grade on the oil. like from 10/40 to 5/30.

I respect that but again what is the point of raising the oil pressure, if you tappets are noisy a short while after fitting them then you oil pressure is low, so it would suggest that your oil pump is worn or the pick up pipe is blocked.

A standard oil pump is more than up to the job without the need to mess about with oil grades etc.

yeah I suppose the pump could have some wear. engine is on 105k. had the sump off and cleaned out along with oil strainer a week before I changed the tappets just to be sure there was not a trace of dirt in engine. maybe I was sold duff lifters but cant prove that in any way. so I don't fancy forking out again and having to bed another set in to the cam. and as I already have the agg pump I have nowt to lose by trying it I suppose. easy to change anyway. I don't like using oil thickener as it takes longer for the oil to circulate when engine cold.

usally its not the pump thats the problem

if the oil pressure is low it's noramly because all the oil is buggeing off out the side of the big end and main shells because they are knackerd
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

yeah I suppose there will be some wear here and there but there is not rattle from a cold start. just that annoying intermittent ticking when oil temp is up around 90ish. but I have been running it with atf in the oil for 150 miles now and it is definitely quieter. the only oil pressure specs I can find for the engine are the minimum of 2 bar at 2000rpm but no word of what a good engine should be reading. just gona run it as is until weekend then if all quiet give it an oil change and leave it at that.

hey just incase anyone is interested. the agg oil pump is a direct fit to the 1.8 pb engine. but not vice versa.

nah you can machine the shaft on the pb pump for crankshaft clearance. and I would assume/hope that would work out cheaper than a new pump. im sure if you know someone with a lathe you could get it done for the cost of a pint lol

My profession negates the need to bribe with a pint
