managed to have a look at the wheel this weekend missus said didn't make the sound through week.  i checked wheel anyway no play in wheel.  if it was a wheel bearing surely it would be constant and a whirring sound.  thanks for help so far

Mine wasn't always heard. I thought it was cheap discs and pads but was still there every now and then until I changed the bearing.
Golf Mk4 GTi Turbo, R32 front bumper, Lowered on ProSport Coilovers, Bora illuminated vents, Armrest, Heko wind deflectors, Aluminium vinyl trim.

Soon to be added, FMIC, 3" exhaust, Remap..oh and new turbo :(

happy days i'll get it back to work and strip the hub down.  got a press and all that sweet gear here.

Ive got the exactly same problem  :undecided: i Put it down to the wheel bearing too, going to have a butchers tomorrow as it gets pretty annoying  :angry:
