Front strut trouble

The hex keyway on top of my front strut is rounded as anyone got any suggestions  other than gripping it with mole grips

pneumatic driver on the nut and it might come loose.
other than that... you wanna replace the strut or just top mounts?

if you're gonna change struts then hammer in a 10mm allen key or otherwise torx (thin enough so you can still get 21mm spark plug socket on to undo nut). that should do the trick....

I bought the strut 2nd hand and stripped it down using impact gun
Iam going to put new top mounts on and fit it to the car just worried about fitting it without being able to stop it spinning because of the rounded off Allen key way

you should be able to tighten it up with impact gun.... other than that cut in slot and use large flat screwdriver, though i doubt you'd be able to stop it spinning with that. :D

not gonna comment on 2nd hand struts though

Fitting one strut at a time?

Silly idea - get a pair of matched ones: they do quite a lot.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I had the same problem on my 16v, tried everything on the nut and shock but no joy.
I ended up covering the engine and grinding off the flat ring of the top cap,
It's shaped like an upside down top hat, I ground off the brim!
The strut will then drop through the hole in the  chassis leg and you can get it in the vice etc,
A new top cap from VW was about 7 quid

Just make sure you cover the engine with something flame retardent, especially the metering head

Maybe look to your own stupid posts before endeavouring to lampoon others:

This implies you purchased one strut, which was secondhand.

Got any more stupid comments you want to make?
