diagnostic question on fuel pump ?

my son has just got a Mk3 1.4 (yeh 1.4...i know but he needs cheap insurance)
the fuel pump is playing up & blowing the 20A fuse ,no short circuits to earth
 seems its drawing too much current, but can't decide if the pump is going home
... or maybe the fuel filter is blocked causing the excessive loading of the pump

anyone had similar symptoms ?

replace pump its clearly had it... blocked filter would cause this...

What about the relay?

tweed... tried the relay , but problem is still the same

 hainesz...got the old pump out ,seems to be a pattern one as has no VW part number on it
 going to replace the pump , ordered one today , fingers crossed

the previous owner had a ,new cat. converter & lambda sensor fitted last week....
seems they(garage) broke the heat feed cable on the lambda sensor, this flapping about is what was blowing the fuel pump fuse,as they share the same fuse

took me a while to sus it out
so the lesson is just because its a new part ,don't mean it aint broke

+1 that will be them problem i had the same problem replaced fuel pump relay fuses and still kept blowing... unplug sensor from under bonnet replace fuse and see if it stops blowing if so replace sensor again...
