Adaptors to fit modern battery in MkIII
« on: 01 September 2012, 09:44 »
I've got an old Varta in my MkIII but the new batteries have a different "hold down" height..

The stock battery has a edge lip of 19mm tall, so the new batteries with a 10mm edge are loose under the slot at the back and the clamp doesn't fit right.

I've heard there are adaptors for this.. but where do you get them.. and are they brand specific (ie I want to fit a Bosch S4 063 do I need a Bosch one) ??

Could just wedge something in there I suppose.. but what??? I'd rather do it properly though tbh

Didn't think I'd have this much trouble just replacing the battery LOL!

I've had this issue on other cars before, quite often it can ce sorted by flipping the clamping plate over or shimming it out to suit.

Mine has an adapter. It a plastic shim like you mentioned. I'd be surprised if the place that would sell you te battery couldn't provide one

Was able to get just one adaptor from a car parts shops after trying loads of places... fitted that on the side which goes under an edge, then on the other side flipped the clamp round (front to back not upside down) and once tightened that seems quite a snug fit. Thanks for the idea guys

For future reference, the VAG part number is 000-915-413. Very hard to find IME but some on ebay atm

Rotate the plate round 180°. Not the best of engineered solutions but it works and will get you through the MOT.
