Coolant leak

hi, i have a mk4 1.8t and the coolent warning light cam on so i checked it and it was low. i topped it up but i noticed crusty redy pinky stuff around some of the coolent hoses etc..
the temperature gauge stays half all the time.

could it be head gasket ?
could it be the radiator ?

also when i put the heater on it smells real bad like k seal or something has been put in.
oil level has stayed the same. the oil cap hasnt got mayonisy gunky stuff and there doesnt seem to be oil in the coolent.

what could be my problem?

sorry im new to golfs dont really no what im doing lol.

Which hoses have the coolant residue on?
check both sides of the block, and where the thermostat housing and sensor are

Do the coolant hoses feel rock hard when you have been for a run ? also try sniffing the resorvoir to see if it smells of fumes

The top left hose which goes to intercoller has it crusty stuff and a few right side ones.

the hoses feel normal to me. the resorvoir just smells of some coolent stop leck. not oily or anything.

i havnt lost any power either still pulls well

Since refilling it have you lost any?
sounds like overheating if its crusty

where abouts are you?
You could do with checking the water pump is ok, do this by removing the top hose on the expansion tank and holding it over the expansion tank, when you start the car you should have a steady stream

This just happened to me, turns out its the thermostat housing that has a small crack getting it done tommorow.
