Accessing oil filter on 1.8t AUM
« on: 28 June 2012, 15:01 »
Hi

As above really, going to be doing an oil change soon but the engine bay for the 1.8t is a lot more crowded than my old car.

Is it best to change the oil filter from under the car by hand?

Thanks

It can be done either from the top of the bottom. Just sits down the front of the engine.

I did mine from underneath, couldn't find my chain thing so hammer and screwdriver time it was to undo it
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

ive done mine and a 1.8t, mine from top (non turbo so loads of room) and the 1.8t i did from underneeth cause it was already on axle stands.

however still do able. and try just using your hands before you stick a screwdriver through. alot less messyer and aslong as the filter has had oil rubbed around the seal its normally do able with just your hands.

Big pair of groove joint grips is the tool for the job. Never let me down!!

I did mine from the bottom this evening, pretty easy with a chain tool. Just remove the bottom plastic shroud and get your arms up in there!

(note - place your head off to one side or you get an eye full of crud! )

Hammer and Scewdriver worked fine for me also, 18t aum. from underneath on some halfords cheapo ramps, little taps on the filter rim creating a little grove for the screw driver to grip on then before you know it you will turning it off with ya hand! no butchery  required
