I took the headlining out of my golf at the weekend to track a water leak and found that my poor radio signal was down to an Audi shark fin aerial being fitted to the roof with a purple fakra end on it ( I think its male but not 100%) the lead that runs down the body to the back of the headunit also has a male fakra (I think ,that has a black circular hood ) type end so the pair won't fit together. what's the best possible way to join the 2 leads , can I cut both connectors off and solder the wires together ?
The best possible way is to use a new lead.
After that soldering will probably create least resistance.
But (IMO) a better way is to use a connector like a TV aerial cable connector. More resistance possibly, but the screening remains intact so you won't allow interference in to the cable.
If you do solder, make sure you solder the screen so the gaps are as small as possible - preferably as small as the gaps in the screen the runs along the cable. (5 mm?)
The screen makes a Faraday cage around the core and rejects interference.
