MK2 16v just won't idle
« on: 06 April 2012, 10:57 »
Hi,

My 89' Gti16v just doesn't seem to want to idle. I've checked for vacuum leaks and cleaned both the throttle body and ISV both of which haven't done the slightest bit of difference.

Pretty much run out of ideas other than buying new bits here so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

clean the three temp sensors on the r/h side of the head, under the dizzy. two of them control the idle control valve (ISV) and one controls the temp gauge in your clocks, they are the same so you can swap the wires around if one of the sensors are duff.

Swap the ISV out for a known good one.

Go get the mixture checked as well - the metering head may be wandering off on itself, on a geriatric mission to either run lean until it burns a valve, or to try and flood the motor.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Make sure throttle returns fully to its stop, and hits the isv microswitch everytime also. As said clean three temp sensors up, they have blue/white, green/red and red/yellow wires going to them. Make sure isv buzzes on ignition, and carb clean it out. If all this is good, remove idle screw from throttle body, clean with scotchbrite and check o-ring condition, then screw it back in and unwind it to raise tickover to 1000 rpm +/- 50rpm

The plug in top r/h corner of the picture is the one off the dizzy. Ive circled the sensors red, the bottom one is the one i replaced because of the same issue.

And if all else fails check the fifth injector for over fueling and flooding from the WUR!
