The front one is the most common one to go, and easy to swap.

Best way to check is leave the handbrake on, put it in gear and slowly raise the clutch whilst a mate stands and looks over the engine. When the clutch bites and the engine looks like it's about to leap out the bonnet then the mount will be shagged.

Drving along you will proberbly get some vibration when you pull away if there really knackered. Otherwise, you'll be able to feel the engine moving around when you pull away and also if you drive slowly but in a high gear.

Excessive engine/gearbox movement can also get transmitted through to the gear stick.........accelerate and then deccelerate and see how much that gear stick moves. Oh hang on this is mk3, does that mean cable operated? In which case does the same theory apply :lipsrsealed:

not sure if related but i was getting clunking over humps and turned out that the hub nut was loose so the hub was moving too much, for a few mins work might be worth checking

Could also be your break pads shaking. the retainers could of dropped off or need bending back into shape. Go over a bump with the breaks pressed to see if the noise goes away.

Open your bonnet and shake the whole front end and listen for rattles. Listen to the top mounts to see if they click

(dont know much about mk3's)
