Can't reach all the bolts when changing sump :(

i hope you didn't take the gearbox off but just took the gearbox guard off...I changed the transmission oil and filter recently with a mate and wouldn't even dream of taking the gearbox off as that would be

I can remove a sump in 20 mins max (iv removed loads now as i always change Pick up pipe)

i use a Allen key with the Ball end.

When I did my golf one, the original bolts were all just 10mm (I think) bolts. I bought a full set of replacements, and these had the allen key fitment within the bolt though. Think that could be hit and miss.

all ones iv done have had the alen hole in the centre, use a small bar on the allen key, no probles at all..

remember on replacement to torq correctly and use the VW silicone paste

the one we did wasn't on a mk3 so probably slightly different, but there was deffinatly no way of getting to the bolts without taking the gearbox off. Was in a mk1 it started off as an abf I think but has all kinds of different engine parts all over the place trust me we did lots of research to try and find another way

Agreed! Pain in the ar5e. Mine are torx bolts and the only I managed those two was with a long torx but coming to put them back in I could do nothing to avoid cross threading them 

I think maybe a 3/8 or 1/4 bit holder might work, mine are 1/2" and it's the bit holder which gets stuck
