The little tube goes to the mainfold; its a vacuum hose.

The little valve moves about in cold weather on start up to direct warm air into the intake to stop it freezing up. There should be a hose going to the heat shield so that hot exhaust warmed air can be directed in.

If you do remove it, make sure you plug the vacuum hose. I've heard of people using bolts and hose clamps before.

Wicked thanks bud!
So if I blank the small hose and take out the flap my car will still run alright? But might be a bit tricky to start up when bloody cold?

The valve is there to stop fuel freezing, as it is injected so high up, i assume this is a single point injection.
When the inlet air temp goes below a certain value the valve operates a flap which directs hot air off the exhaust manifold back into the inlet.
This is not just for starting, the system works all the time..

Yeah it's a single point injection, basically I know my cars neve guna be quick and the 1.8 gl is pretty much useless to tune big if I can make it a little louder and sound a bit more sporty that will be nice :-)

Can any one give me some pointers on what to do to my airbox with out screwing up the drivability that will be cool.

Unfortunately there is very little you can do with the airbox, maybe fit a k&n, that will give you a bit of noise.
I wouldn't make any holes or remove any of the hot air feed.
