i understand what everyone is saying, i sold my audi a4 avant 1.8t quattro, becuase it was slow and boring! its too easy to just shove a 1.8t engine in, i grew up in the days of twin webbers, manual chokes and fine tuning, my first car was a nova sr, not saxo or 106!!!!! and there is nothing worse than having a high is powered a3 engine with front wheel drive, too much on the front wheels, i just enjoy doing things myself.....i qualified as a mechanic not fitter, was just hoping for heads up on this project!

The point your missing is that even if you did all the work you going to see a max of 145bhp which is still less than a ABF 16v which is a much better engine in how it revs and feels to drive.

As for too much power at the front wheels, it is all down to how it is mapped and driven, mine is around 210bhp and is spot on.

thats cool, you see i went out with the focus on buying a 8v , iv had the 16v in a corrado, was ok, and with doing the changes to the block and head, inlet and exhaust, chip, cams and fueling it will achieve around 170bhp, at least i can say its a vw golf gti 8v, thats my point, if i wanted a3 engine power id just buy an a3,  iv driven a mk1 gti 20v t and the guy is mustard, to every last detail, he made his loom from scratch and i will upload pics to prove, that golf ran just over 300hp and was nuts, but he always said......its no longer a gti, as computers and lots of wiring had replaced genuine vw craftmans ship!!!!!!!

But what is the point of throwing / wasting thousands on it and still end up with only around 145bhp even if you went bonkers and fitted a turbo you going to see 160bhp, a 1.8t out of the box is 150bhp with a remap around 190bhp, it makes so much more sense.

ok, so putting a 16v engine is the better choice and spending a grand should shake it up abit too? im guessing simular or same mounts, iv heard they run the same ecu and loom!? anything else to consider? as i will order a complete engine/box plus what ever else is needed!

Loom and ecu are different, you need to convert to hydraulic clutch as well.
