Which gearbox for better cruising/mpg on 16v gti

It is the easiest one to remove because the cog is right on the end of the box!
By the way you change one gear it does overall effect the ratios of the other four 

Surely that only applies if he changes the final drive.  Simply changing 5th wont affect the other gears, no?

Most people like the VR 1st and 2nd so they mix and match the cogs by changing the final drive to suit.
The final ratios can be wrong as it depends how you drive and how high you're RPM is going to be.
What I wanted to add was using the TDI fifth cog should be better if you just want a longer fifth gear.
The other thing from memory was once you crack the box open it might be better to change out the lay shaft if you are doing a complete strip down! 

There are specialist people out there and these guys have the best reputation I would ring them and ask as much as possible about options for your car.

OP this just a forum we don't do this day in day out you NEED to research and find out what is best for you don't take our word its not gospel, but at least you will not be completely blind when choosing an option best suited for you!
