A reg number isn't going to provide details of the engine swap though.
It will if the owner has told the DVLA what engine it now has in it, as you should do when you change anything about the car including engine and paint colour.
The above will mean nothing to the insurance company though.
Example - Subaru flat four swap into VW camper - it might be 2.0 instead of 2.1 but it could have three times the power.
DVLA won't hold that information.
Insurance company won't be able to join the dots to make that connection.
What you should do for a starter is tell the what the vehicle is and what vehicle the engine has come out of. In my experience they will also want full details of all of the changes made to the car, so make up a list of what you're going to do and mail it over to them when you start discussing the conversion.
