Im afraid in my case, it's rather that it's better full stop!
I have tried 288mm as standard, was awful didn't survive a single track day
996 rear - absolutely rubbish - whilst they have 4 piston calipers the overall surface area of the pistons are less than that of an r32 setup!
312mm with ds2500 - rubbish for track use absolutely not worth trying but didn't fade as quickly as standard
lcr setup with ds2500 - worked better but heat retention was too great, two piece disk is a must
current two piece setup from NEX - ideal for under $2000 mark
All of the above setups were tried and tested on the mk4 weighing the same (1100kg with fuel +/-10kg weighing bridge)
With the same brand new servo, master cylinder and HEL braided brake lines front and rear
Castrol SRF racing brake fluid
I found that my current setup to be impossible to warp or crack thus far, the two piece design allow rapid expansion of disk without distorting.
The same two piece setup means it is far lighter in weight than counterpart single piece disks of the same size
Heat retention properties are not as bad as the full on track setup so these heat up nicely and can be used on road
Cooling is just right, the 28mm veins help dissipate nicely
The pad material provides excellent braking from cold whilst still maintaining a nice operating temperature range
The large 4 pot provides the clamping force that just inspired confidence for late braking
The small fluid galleries in the caliper means there's a solid pedal without much pedal travel unlike other big brake setups which is ideal for the servo size of the mk4
I have had a few big brake setups before, well not big technically, but bigger than standard and will say that these are far superior to the lcr setup.
